History of the MBTI® Bibliography
The CAPT Bibliography for the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® instrument has been maintained by CAPT since 1976. The CAPT Research Services staff also does literature searches for a small fee, and these can be sent by email, mail, or fax.
The number of entries on the CAPT Bibliography for the MBTI instrument is a reflection of the growth in the use and applications of the Indicator worldwide. In 1968 Educational Testing Service produced an MBTI Bibliography with 81 entries. Soon after the founding of CAPT in 1975, Mary McCaulley, Ph.D., applied for a grant to produce the Medical Monographs and an MBTI Bibliography. CAPT's first edition had 337 entries.
The number of bibliography entries has steadily increased over the years. In 1977 Tom Carskadon published the first issue of the Journal of Psychological Type®. Then in 1985 the Association of Psychological Type (APT) began Qualifying Training, soon followed by other organizations. This broadened the base of MBTI users presenting at conferences, writing books, and conducting research studies.
Two other developments in the early 1990s also had a tremendous impact on the growth of the bibliography: conferences and translations.
The advent of conferences with published proceedings, papers, and tapes began with APT XIII in 1989 and was followed by ITUO in 1992 and by CAPT in 1993. APT organizations in other countries now hold national conferences as well. Versions of the MBTI instrument in other languages began appearing in the late 1980s. As they developed their own constituencies, publications, newsletters, journals, and conference papers began coming to the CAPT Library from around the globe.
