STEP III FAQS with Answers

Allen L. Hammer, Wayne D. Mitchell, & Naomi L. Quenk

  • What is MBTI® Step III™? The Step III™ instrument is designed to elicit information about a respondent's current ways of using perception and judgment. The Step III Report™ describes the likely effectiveness of those uses, along with suggestions for enhancing one's uses of perception and judgment in specific areas. As with all MBTI® instruments, Step III™ results are interpreted in the context of healthy personality and require respondent verification of results.
  • What is being measured? Type development, defined as effective use of one's natural type, specifically perception and judgment.
  • Who is developing III™? It is a joint project involving CPP, publisher of the whole family of MBTI® works; CAPT (Center for Applications of Psychological Type), which holds all of Myers' and McCaulley's original work; and the MBTI Trust, headed by Katharine and Peter Myers.
  • How is Step III™ different from Step II? Step II provides a profile of a person's results on all twenty Step II facets, with associated behavioral/attitudinal descriptions. Step III respondents receive a report containing a number of descriptive statements and suggestions relevant to the way they are currently using perception and judgment. There are no "scores" or results for every client on every Step III statement.
  • Do people have to take Step I and Step II first? No, but it may be helpful.
  • What clients is it appropriate for? Anyone who would benefit from awareness of the ways they use perception and judgment and/or guidance in developing and making more effective use of perception and judgment so they can develop their type as fully as possible.
  • When would we use Step III instead of or in addition to Step II? Step II is focused on the individuality of people sharing the same type. The results promote understanding of oneself and better understanding of others. Step II has established uses for enhancing communication, team functioning, etc. Step III focuses on each individual's unique functioning and does not really compare one person's results to another's, because there are too many possibilities to allow that. Two people may have the same pattern in one specific area, but further comparisons may be irrelevant because the context for that single similarity will differ considerably across people.
  • Who can use Step III? Guidelines require an advanced degree in a relevant field to be able to register for the Step III Training Program. Professionals such as coaches, counselors, and others who work with individuals are potential users of Step III.
  • How long will the training be? The program is currently being developed and will be two to three days at a minimum.
  • How will Step III feedback be provided? Feedback will consist of a one-on-one review of results with a professional who has been trained in interpreting Step III.
  • How many items does the instrument have? 222
  • Who will publish and distribute Step III? CPP is the publisher and distributor.
  • When will Step III be available? Anticipated publication in 2008.
